August | Slowly But Surely
PAST MONTH Reflections:
The month of July has been a fairly good one, albeit quite hot. We’ve had great weather here with lots of sunshine and a few thunderstorms. My cherry tomato plant has tripled in size over the past month and my dahlia plant is putting out its first blooms. My hoyas are all thriving - I’ve included some photos at the bottom of this section to showcase just how happy a few of my plants are.
I’ve been reading the book It’s Okay That You’re Not Okay by Megan Devine and it’s wonderful. If you or anyone you know is experiencing heavy grief, you shouldn’t pass this book up! Also recommended in the grief category is author Nora McInerny. I’ve recently finished binge reading her books No Happy Endings as well as It’s Okay to Laugh (Crying Is Cool, Too).
Lately I’ve been thinking about how everything in life is made up of shades of grey. We tend to default to either/or thinking, particularly during times of stress, but that cuts us off from having any compassion for any other point of view.
Most people are simply doing their best, even if that doesn’t look great to you. Things just aren’t so simple. People get so caught up in doing what they think is right, and they too often end up hurting others during the process. That’s not to excuse other people’s bad behavior, just to help explain it a little.
Anyway, a few days ago I saw John Mayer in concert for the second time ever, and he certainly did not disappoint. He played a ton of his old songs, and it really surprised me just how many hits he has. If you haven’t seen him play live yet, you definitely should. Enjoy the month ahead and please feel free to leave me a comment below!
You should write because you love the shape of stories and sentences and the creation of different words on a page. Writing comes from reading, and reading is the finest teacher of how to write.
